PARIS (France): The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel
The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel was built in 1807 by the architects Fontaine and Percier and was the entrance to the Tuileries Palace.
The of 14.5 m high, 20m wide and 9m thick arch is a replica of the Arch of Septimus Severe in Rome. Its eight Corinthian columns of pink granite came from Meudon, a castle built in 1522 and demolished during the French Revolution. The Carrousel is decorated with statues representing eight soldiers of the Napoleonic empire dressed in the uniforms of their regiments. The six bas-reliefs represent the victories of Napoleon I.
The arch is surmounted by a chariot drawn by four Corinthian style horses sculpted by Bosio in 1805.
The Carrousel Arch is in alignment with the Arc de Triomphe and the Grande Arche de la Défense.
