LISBON (Portugal): Alaskan Sea-otter (Enhydra lutris)
The sea otter is a mammal with very peculiar characteristics and one that is well adapted to life at sea. Its fur, which keeps it dry and protected from the cold, is made of two extremely dense layers, which catch air bubbles between their oily fibres. These extraordinary animals are the only marine mammals that use tools! They open the carapaces and shells of their prey by dextrously beating them with a rock. They are able to maintain a constant body temperature and replace all the energy they expend because they eat the equivalent of 30 % of their own weight daily. Also, sea otters are important for the ecosystem because by feeding on sea urchins, they protect other populations associated with kelp beds.
